Art for Lent 2016

This year, we have begun what we hope will be a creative exploration in years to come - we have invited different artists to submit original works of art to express some aspect of each week of Lent.  Each week we will add the art as it is submitted.  The art (which may be an original painting, photograph, drawing, or sculpture) will be on display in the sanctuary of Trinity each week during worship.

Call for Original Art for Lent

Trinity Moravian Church is issuing a call for proposals of an original piece of art (painting, photography, sculpture) by artists for each of the seven weeks of Lent, intended to capture or portray the emotion and spirit of that week in the season.  The overall themes for Lentare fasting (or self-denial), almsgiving (or helping the needy), and prayer in all its forms. Themes and Scripture lessons are available opn a downloadable PDF HERE. Artists must let us know in advance which week they wish to submit for; submission ofconcept/proposal for approval by a committee must be received by February 1. The first Sunday is already assigned!

Each approved artist will receive a small grant of up to $100 if necessary to cover material costs.

Each piece of artwork will be displayed in the sanctuary of Trinity Moravian Church; a photographic reproduction will be displayed on the TMC website; and artwork will be used on the bulletin cover for services during that week in Lent.  In addition, a color printed book will be available, with a copy preserved at the Moravian Church Archives.  Each piece of art MUST be completed and delivered two weeks prior to the display date! The First Sunday in Lent this year is February 14 – so time is of the essence! After Easter, the collection will be displayed in an area art gallery for a month, at the end of which they will be auctioned.  The sale price (minus the original grant) will be split equally between the artist and Trinity Moravian Church; proceeds will be used charitably for emergency assistance for those in need in South Winston-Salem. We expect significan tmedia coverage about the artists and the artwork.

We are seeking works of art that will speak to a broad public.  Artists should tend towards somewhat representational art that will be accessible to the average viewer.  The size of painting, print or sculpture in longest measurement should be larger than 18” and not exceed 60”.
