On Sunday, August 31st, it was announced that Trinity Moravian Church will be “adopting” Konnoak Middle School. Given the funding crisis for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools that came to light over the summer — a budget deficit of $46 million — every local school is starting the new school year with fewer staff and dramatically reduced funding. While we can’t solve the larger problem, we must do what we can to help the teachers and children, who are certainly not at fault.
Our sister church, Konnoak Hills Moravian Church, has had a long-standing relationship with Konnoak Elementary; Home Moravian Church adopted Diggs-Latham Elementary several years ago. Both relationships have been rewarding for both the schools and the churches.
Konnoak Middle School (formerly Philo-Hill MS) has no such relationship, and we feel that we can meet a need and make a difference. We already have some connection to many KMC students who attended Sunnyside Freedom School. We can collect educational supplies, write supportive notes for staff and teachers, and perhaps help provide some special events that are no longer covered by the restrictive budget.
Pastor Jackman is challenging other churches in Forsyth County to step up and help a school close to their building. Imagine what could happen if every church in the area decided to make a difference!
